Psychological tools for non-clinicians helping others in extreme life situations.
Author: Prof Agnieszka Popiel MD, PhD, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Warsaw, Poland. Agnieszka Popiel is the President of the Polish Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy and a member of EABCT’s Humanitarian Crises Response working group.
About the training – Poland has welcomed more Ukrainian refugees than any other country. Many Polish people were involved in organizing the refugee centres for them. For the lay citizens involved in helping, it was frequently the first time they had taken care of people who had experienced extreme stress. Understanding the reactions to trauma is essential to enable them to help tactfully and efficiently. At the first line of helping there were also local voluntary fire brigades involved in organizing support.
In this video the leading experts in the field of trauma research and treatment in Poland – Prof Bogdan Zawadzki, Dr Ewa Pragłowska and Prof Agnieszka Popiel, focus on developing the knowledge necessary for non-professionals (and professionals) of basic psychological tools necessary to help others in extreme life situations – they present the basics of typical reactions to trauma, basics of Psychological First Aid (WHO), describe situations when professional psychological help is necessary, and finally discuss ways to prevent PTSD resulting from job-related or secondary trauma.
The video is in Polish – hoping it will be understandable for all Polish-speaking spectators, so many of whom live and help others in Europe.
